The peace and quiet of our beloved neighborhood in Chatham, NY, is under threat. Many of us chose to make Bashford Road and the surrounding areas our home in the RL-2 residential zone, seeking the serene, rural residential character it provides. This invaluable tranquility is why we've put down roots here, raising families and building futures. However, the proposed rezoning of this area from Residential (RL-2) to Agricultural to allow for commercial events poses a serious threat to our way of life. 

If this rezoning goes through, our neighborhood will be opened up to events like weddings, wine tastings, and festivals. While these activities may seem harmless, they bring along with them increased traffic, noise, and disruption, fundamentally altering the fabric of our community. Imagine the constant hustle, blaring noise, and never-ending flow of vehicles—it’s a stark contrast to the quiet evenings and serene weekends we currently cherish.

The implications extend beyond mere inconvenience and noise. Increased traffic and disruption could significantly impact public safety. Our roads, primarily meant for light residential use, would face congestion and the increased risk of accidents. Moreover, the infrastructure wasn’t designed to accommodate a spike in activity. This could potentially strain our resources, impacting emergency response times and day-to-day transportation.

Our drinking water, another critical aspect of our well-being and health, could also face threats due to increased demand and potential contamination from broader usage. Additionally, a shift in zoning could very well diminish our property values, causing financial strain to families who have invested their life savings into these homes.

We must protect our community's integrity, safety, and value. Chatham's allure lies in its peaceful rural residential character, cherished by all who call it home. Changing this to accommodate commercial interests would strip us of our identity and endanger our quality of life.
