The Issue

Our neighborhood is about more than just a collection of houses; it's a community where we raise our families, nurture lifelong friendships, and build memories. We are deeply concerned about the recent proposal to rezone our area to accommodate a new gas station. This change poses serious threats to the health and safety of every family that calls this neighborhood home.

Living in close proximity to a gas station significantly increases the risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), benzene, a carcinogen found in gasoline, can be harmful even at low exposure levels. The emissions and leaks from a gas station can seep into the air and groundwater, increasing the risk of respiratory problems and other health issues among residents, particularly affecting children and the elderly.

Moreover, our neighborhood streets were not designed to accommodate the increased traffic and congestion that a gas station would bring. With more vehicles, we face heightened risks of traffic accidents, endangering pedestrians and cyclists who frequently use our roads.

The introduction of a gas station also threatens the tranquillity and safety of our community. Increased noise from traffic and 24/7 operations would disrupt the peace we've cherished. Furthermore, we must consider the potential for increased crime rates, as studies have found that gas stations are frequent targets for theft and vandalism.

We understand the need for development and progress but believe it should not come at the cost of health, safety, and harmony of our community. We propose alternative locations for the gas station, ones that are better suited to accommodate such a facility without compromising our well-being. Just a few miles away, there are commercial zones specifically designated for such developments, which wouldn't impose on residential areas like ours.

We implore local authorities to reconsider this rezoning application and to prioritize the health and safety of their constituents. Let's protect our neighborhood from unnecessary risks and preserve the quality of life we've worked hard to build.

Please join us in opposing this rezoning by signing this petition. Together, we can send a strong message that our health and safety matter and must be upheld by those who govern us.
