The Issue
Living in this community has given me a deep appreciation for the natural space here at West Neck in Virginia Beach. This isn’t just an area of empty property—it’s a sanctuary bustling with life. Wildlife find their homes here, local ecosystems thrive, and it contributes to the serene environment that makes West Neck a beautiful and peaceful place to reside.
The proposed development of the 86 acres at West Neck threatens to irrevocably change the landscape. This project won’t just result in new buildings; it will disrupt and destroy habitats, displace countless animals, and permanently alter the environment we love. Once land is cleared and built upon, it can never be fully restored. The unique character and ecological balance that define our community will be lost.
Statistically, overdevelopment has been linked to increases in local flooding issues, a reduction in local biodiversity, and a decline in mental health among residents due to the loss of green spaces. According to studies, green spaces contribute significantly to the well-being of residents, offering recreation, tranquillity, and a refuge from urban life.
The long-term impacts of this development include increased traffic congestion, strain on local infrastructure, and escalated noise levels, threatening the very essence of why residents like myself chose to call West Neck home.
We propose that the city of Virginia Beach halts the rezoning and considers alternative options such as protecting this land as a nature reserve or exploring smaller-scale developments that preserve the core ecosystems. This would not only protect our environment but also ensure future generations can enjoy and benefit from these green spaces.
Please, join us in urging Virginia Beach city officials to prioritize ecological preservation over short-term economic gains. Sign this petition to save the 86 acres at West Neck and protect the natural beauty and health of our community for years to come.
