The Issue

The city of Olathe, KS is facing a significant decision that could reshape its landscape and impact the lives of its residents. A proposal has been put forward to amend the zoning of a specific area from general business to mixed use development. This amendment would allow for the construction of a four-story, 207-unit apartment complex accompanied by a strip mall.

While development and expansion can be positive when undertaken with careful planning and consideration, this particular proposal has raised concerns among local residents and business owners. The shift from general business to a mixed-use zone represents a radical change, one that may not be in the best interest of the Olathe community.

Firstly, the introduction of such a large-scale residential complex could severely strain the existing infrastructure in Olathe. Roads, water supply, sewage systems, and privacy accommodating the needs of current residents. Introducing hundreds of additional residents will lead to heavier traffic on 151st street at the intersections at Mur-Len, S Locust, Brougham, and Blackbob.  There is no plan to widen or change the existing traffic stops.

Moreover, the character and identity of Olathe are rooted in its unique blend of commercial and community spaces. Allowing this amendment could disrupt local businesses that have thrived under the current zoning laws. Many small businesses might face challenges in adapting to the increased competition from a new strip mall, potentially leading to closures and a loss of local jobs.

Furthermore, community safety and cohesion is a primary concern. A densely populated apartment complex could lead to increased noise and a potential rise in crime rates, altering the quiet and safe environment that Olathe residents cherish.

We urge the city planners and local government to DENY this rezoning amendment. Alternative development plans should be explored that maintain the integrity and sustainability of Olathe while meeting future housing needs. Local stakeholders should be given a voice in shaping these plans to ensure they reflect the collective vision of the community.

Please join us in opposing the rezoning amendment in Olathe, KS. Your support is crucial in safeguarding the future of our community. Sign this petition to make your voice heard and protect the well-being and harmony of Olathe. Together, we can preserve the essence of our beloved city.
