The Issue

College campuses should be places where students can focus on learning, personal growth, and preparing for their future. However, many students in Wisconsin face unnecessary barriers when trying to access emergency contraception. The morning after pill is an important healthcare resource that can help prevent unintended pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure, yet access remains limited on some college campuses. Restricting access creates unnecessary obstacles for students and may negatively affect their health, well-being, and ability to continue their education.

According to a 2019 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hundreds of thousands of pregnancies occur each year among young women in the United States, many of whom are college-aged. Research has also shown that access to emergency contraception does not increase sexual activity but instead helps reduce unintended pregnancies by allowing people to make informed healthcare decisions. In Wisconsin, barriers to contraceptive access disproportionately affect students with fewer financial resources or limited transportation, creating unequal access to healthcare and increasing educational disparities.

Universities share the goal of supporting student success, safety, and well-being. Ensuring timely access to emergency contraception aligns with that mission by helping students remain healthy and focused on their education. Rather than viewing this issue as a political debate, colleges should recognize it as one of student support and equal access to healthcare. Students, campus health professionals, and university administrators can work together to develop policies that meet student needs while promoting a safe and supportive campus environment.

We encourage Wisconsin colleges and universities to review their current policies regarding emergency contraception and work collaboratively with students and healthcare professionals to reduce unnecessary barriers to access. If you believe students should have equitable access to essential healthcare services, please sign this petition and consider contacting your university administration or student government representatives to advocate for policies that support student health, academic success, and informed decision-making. Together, we can promote healthier campuses where every student has the resources they need to succeed.
