Dear Petitioners,
As you know, despite widespread civic opposition, Olivia Chow’s city council is proceeding with renaming Yonge-Dundas Square as well as two TTC stations - with more renaming on the docket for the future. This assault on Toronto’s identity is an appalling chapter in our city’s history, and as Trent University PhD student Patrick Igbinijesu asserted, the renaming was “…a form of spatial violence against certain populations in the context of identity and belonging.”
Many in the city’s bureaucracy want you to forget about this misguided renaming. That will not happen.
In fact, in a suspected six-figure deal, Yonge-Dundas Square has hired a marketing firm to “rebrand” and “sell” Sankofa to Torontonians to force acceptance. As part of this “re-education” campaign, an agency will benefit from this contract and spend your tax dollars telling you why you should accept ‘Sankofa Square.’ This story only gets more absurd with time.
The Square is soliciting input from citizens on the name, and now it’s high time to let them know we will not be persuaded by slick marketing campaigns. We encourage all petitioners to fill out this survey and speak your mind:
We must remain steadfast when our elected officials believe they can unilaterally spend our money on frivolous things. The attacks on historic Toronto by activist councillors and their enablers will not be tolerated.
Stay tuned for more updates soon.
