Stop the Removal of Vital School Programs at Highland High School
Stop the Removal of Vital School Programs at Highland High School
The Issue
Working at Highland High School in Palmdale, CA, I've witnessed firsthand the incredible impact that special needs and general education programs have on our students. Each day, I see children with special needs make progress, find joy, and grow in ways that wouldn't be possible without these essential programs. It pains me deeply to hear that the school administration is considering removing them.
The programs targeted for cuts provide unparalleled support to our diverse student body, from tailored special needs education to enriching general education opportunities. Removing these programs could significantly hinder the development of many of our students, leaving them without the necessary resources to succeed.
Statistics from the National Center for Education Statistics highlight that students with access to specialized educational resources perform significantly better in both academic and social settings. In fact, schools that support inclusive education saw a 33% improvement in student retention rates.
In the Antelope Valley Union High School District , special needs programs have been a cornerstone for fostering an inclusive community where every child, regardless of their abilities, can thrive. Removing these programs would not only deny students these crucial benefits but would also fracture the supportive environment we’ve worked so hard to create.
We urge the school administration to reconsider their decision. Instead of removing these vital programs, we ask them to explore other cost-saving measures that do not compromise the education and well-being of our students. Solutions could include seeking grants, cutting unnecessary administrative costs, or involving the community in fundraising efforts.
Let's ensure that every child at Highland High School has the opportunity to reach their full potential by keeping these invaluable programs intact. Stand with us and sign the petition to protect the future of our students.
