I started creating a communal play area in our Perry Barr Village because our local park has become a place where children do not feel safe. It is heartbreaking to describe the conditions there: individuals misusing drugs, urinating, vomiting in the sand, and even instances of homelessness. Such scenes deter children from enjoying the basic joys of playing in a playground, a place meant for laughter and carefree times. It's distressing and unacceptable.

Driven by a need to provide a safe environment, I brought a trampoline, a pool, and various toys for the kids, transforming a small piece of shared garden into a haven. It quickly became a lively and joyful space where children could play freely without fear. It has not only been beneficial for the kids, but it also became a sanctuary for me—a place where my anxiety and depression could slowly wane as I watched the children play and interacted with the community.

However, despite no complaints from our community members, Legal & General through Pinnacle sent an email demanding the removal of this sanctuary. This initiative was about more than just play—it's about safety and mental well-being for every child and adult involved.

Perry Barr Village is in desperate need of safe and accessible areas for children. With no immediate alternative or solution being offered to improve the state of our current playground, removing this safe space is not the answer. We propose working together with Legal & General and the local council to find a mutually agreeable solution that prioritizes children’s safety and well-being.
