The Issue

Driving in Portland has become an increasingly frustrating experience due to the poor driving culture. The roads are crowded, drivers are aggressive, and following traffic rules seems to be an optional luxury for many. Now, there’s talk of introducing Waymo’s self-driving cars to Portland. This is a decision that we, the local residents, need to reconsider.

The introduction of Waymo's autonomous vehicles could exacerbate the already chaotic traffic situation. Imagine, on top of dealing with erratic drivers, having to navigate around self-driving cars that may not yet be well-adapted to Portland's unique traffic dynamics. There have been concerns raised about how these autonomous vehicles will interact with human drivers and if they will lead to more traffic congestion or accidents, given that they operate on technology still in its evolutionary stage.

In cities where self-driving vehicles have already been introduced, such as San Francisco and Phoenix, reports indicate mixed results. According to a 2023 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), while autonomous vehicles have the potential to reduce long-term accidents significantly, their initial roll-out phase has seen an increase in road mishaps due to software glitches and unpredictable interactions with human drivers.

Moreover, self-driving technology must navigate the unpredictable weather conditions of the Pacific Northwest. Heavy rainfall, local road layouts, and unpredictable pedestrian behavior are factors that could hugely challenge the current technology's safety and efficiency.

Instead of imposing Waymo's fleet onto Portland streets, we need to first conduct thorough, independent safety assessments specifically tailored to our city’s environment. Proper feedback mechanisms should be established with local residents and traffic experts to evaluate the viability and timing of such technology in this area.

Join me in taking a stand to halt the release of Waymo’s autonomous vehicles in Portland, until we are certain that thorough testing and necessary adaptations have been made. Portland’s streets should remain safe and navigable for human drivers, not a testing ground for technology still in the making. Let’s ensure our city takes cautious and informed steps into this new era of transportation.

Please sign this petition to urge our city council and regulatory bodies to reconsider this imminent release and prioritize the safety and practicality for all Portland residents. Together, we can safeguard our city’s streets.
