Stop the release of “Hunting Matthew Nichols” in North America

The Issue

We are the city of Port Rupert, a community that has faced a deeply traumatic and challenging chapter in our past—a chapter that is now at risk of being distorted and sensationalized by a forthcoming film, "Hunting Matthew Nichols." We believe this movie takes significant artistic liberties, painting an inaccurate and damaging picture of events that have deeply affected the lives of so many within our community.

The potential theatrical release of "Hunting Matthew Nichols" in Canada and the USA threatens to reopen wounds that we, the people of Port Rupert, have been working tirelessly to heal. The memories of this case are still fresh and painful for many who were directly impacted. While filmmakers may argue for their creative licenses, the reality is that art cannot be prioritized over the well-being and dignity of real people who continue to carry the emotional weight of these events.

It is crucial to understand that the film's narrative, as suggested by its trailers and reports, misrepresents the actual events and characters related to the Matthew Nichols case. The liberty taken in its production fails to respect the truth and risks further tarnishing the reputations of those innocent and affected community members portrayed inaccurately. Horror and thrill might sell tickets, but they come at the cost of perpetuating misconceptions and further stigmatizing those who have suffered enough.

Our community values healing, forgiveness, and moving forward in peace. The release of "Hunting Matthew Nichols" undermines these values. The financial gain of a few should not outweigh the emotional harm inflicted upon an entire community. Our story is not for sale, and our pain should not be commodified for entertainment purposes.

We urge film distributors and cinema chains across North America to stand in solidarity with us by refusing to show "Hunting Matthew Nichols." Let us honor the real stories that deserve to be told with truth and empathy rather than sensationalism.

We kindly ask for your support by signing this petition. Your signature represents a stand for ethical storytelling and community well-being over profit-driven motives. Let's amplify the voices of Port Rupert and ensure that our past is remembered with dignity and accuracy. Please sign and support our cause.
