Hi everyone, we have had some temporary good news: yesterday we learned that Samantha Knight's killer and my abuser, Michael Guider, is to remain in prison for an additional 28 days. He won't be released this week, as planned.
28 days is the maximum amount of time the judge could detain him. We expect that he will then be detained for another 28 days, which takes him to the August final hearing.
Will we just be back at square one all over again?
As I've always said, prison release is based on rehabilitation. We have no evidence to show that Guider has been properly rehabilitated. He has shown zero remorse for what he did to me, Samantha, and other children. Just this week, Guider's own brother told media: "keep my child killer brother locked up."
Justice Richard Button yesterday said this. It makes me sick to read it:
"I think it true to say that [Michael Guider] retains an intense sexual attraction to children."
Justice Button also said:
"The current refusal of the defendant to accept any responsibility of any kind for the death of the deceased is concerning indeed. It intensifies the concerns...about his refusal to reveal the disposition of the body of the deceased. It must be interpreted as a significant backward step. In my opinion, it raises a question not only about his acceptance of responsibility for what he has done, but also, perhaps, about his mental state more generally."
I'm not going to sit around waiting for the next 28 days. Can you join me in calling for Knights Law (no body, no release) to be passed in NSW? We need to do all we can to bring some sense of closure to grieving families. We need to protect our children from predators like Michael Guider.
