Stop the Reinstatement of Wolf Killing and Trapping Contests

Stop the Reinstatement of Wolf Killing and Trapping Contests
The Issue
As a parent whose son worked at a Wolf Sanctuary in the United States, I have personally seen the crucial role wolves play in our ecosystem. Recently, a law was proposed which aims at reinstating killing and trapping contests of these majestic creatures - a step that would lead us back into an era of ecological short-sightedness and cruelty. It's a matter of deep concern that this law is being considered with no public consultation.
Wolves, like all creatures, matter in our ecosystem. In many parts of the world, when wolves were categorized as endangered, the imbalances it caused were startling and lend credence to the inherent value of these creatures to our environment. We must remember how the near extinction of wolves (such as in Yellowstone National Park) led to overpopulation of certain species and degradation of the landscape, causing a ripple effect throughout the entire ecosystem (source: Scientific American, April 2018).
But instead of reflecting on why species like wolves are precious and essential, it feels as though we are scapegoating them for challenges ungulate populations are facing, primarily due to habitat mismanagement. It's not only unjust, but it distracts us from addressing real and prevalent issues, such as healthcare and the economy.
I urge everyone to raise their voice against this potential setback to our environmental stewardship. Let us not destroy the balance of our ecosystem out of ill-considered decisions. The reinstatement of wolf killing and trapping contests is not a solution. It's time we focus on the actual issues at hand. Please, sign this petition to protect our wolves, honor our ecosystem, and push back against ill-conceived laws.
