The Issue

We are deeply concerned about the proposed trash transfer station that is set to handle 500 tons of waste each day in Cooper Township. This facility, which seeks permitting for such massive waste management, will see trash truckloads and semi trucks coming and going from Route 11 and Grovania Drive. This not only threatens the peaceful living conditions of our local community but also places undue strain on the roads and infrastructure in Montour and Columbia Counties.

Imagine the constant noise and traffic disruptions not only impacting our daily lives but also potentially depreciating property values. The environmental implications are also dire, with the possibility of increased water pollution, odor, and noise impacting the health and lifestyle of our communities.

While we are in pursuit of our zoning appeal, we also need to take action to be prepared for the next steps. By signing this petition, you’re taking a stand for the health, safety, and quality of life of residents in Montour and Columbia Counties. Together, we can send a strong message that our community will not stand by and watch our home, roads, and invaluable natural surroundings suffer. Please sign this petition to stop the trash transfer station in Cooper Township.

HERE ARE SOME QUICK FACTS:

-The PennDOT Highway Occupancy Permit for a commercial low volume driveway allows 750 vehicles, or up to 1500 TRIPS per day.

-The DEP permit application is for 500 tons/day of municipal waste. For perspective, the Lycoming Landfill accepts 200 tons/day, so this facility alone could handle 1/4 of the landfills daily volume. The Sunbury Transfer Station is handling approximately 14,000 tons/year while this facility would be allowed to handle 182,000 tons. As a side note, the Sunbury Facility is not running anywhere near the capacity of their permit, so this transfer station is not needed in our community.

  • Noise, smell, and rodents are all realistic concerns.
  • This site is surrounded by agricultural and residential land with the closest residential property being only 300 feet away.
  • Real estate values WILL be negatively impacted.
  • The permit, if issued, has accommodations for 24 hour/day operations.
  • This property has wetlands and a waterway that makes it way to Fishing Creek and ultimately to the Susquehanna River.
  • There are numerous nearby properties served by well water that could be impacted.
  • The facility will connect to public sewer with no pre-treatment facility on site to deal with the leachate coming off the tipping floor. That will become the problem of Danville Borough to treat before it goes back into the river.
