The Issue

I live right across the street from the proposed site of the new slaughterhouse at Chancey Bay Ranch in western Martin County, Florida. The ranch is owned by people in Brazil and the cattle are not sold locally. This development is not just a threat to the environment and the local ecosystem, but it directly impacts my family's safety, health, and quality of life and that of the people that live in Martin County or on Lake Okeechobee.

The construction of a slaughterhouse would significantly increase traffic and noise pollution in our peaceful community. Hundreds of trucks transporting livestock and meat would create continuous noise, potential road hazards, and pollution, affecting both the air quality and the tranquillity of our neighborhood.

Moreover, slaughterhouses are known for their heavy water usage and waste production, which can contaminate local water supplies. The discharge of animal by-products and waste can lead to a pungent smell and attract pests like flies and rodents, creating an unsanitary and unpleasant living environment that can contaminate Lake Okeechobee as the State is currently spending millions of dollars to clean up the lake. In andditon the homes in this area survive on well water that can become contaminated. Information from the EPA suggests that improper waste disposal in such facilities has led to the pollution of streams and groundwater in other areas of Florida, putting local wildlife and residents at risk.

The proposed site is also near communities and recreational areas. The presence of a slaughterhouse contradicts the community's commitment to providing a healthy and safe environment for our children and families. Child development studies emphasize the importance of living in physically safe and healthy surroundings, free from industrial hazards.

It's important to consider alternative sites for such a facility, away from residential areas and vulnerable natural habitats, where they can operate without imposing on the daily lives and wellness of local residents.

I urge the local authorities to reconsider this proposal and look for a more appropriate location for the slaughterhouse that does not infringe on our community’s peace and health. Please help us in preserving the environment and the sanctity of our homes by signing this petition. Your signature can make a difference in preventing the irreversible impact this development would have on our neighborhood.
