The Issue

We have a deep love for our community in Warrior, Blount County. It’s where we lay down roots, build our lives, and create memories. However, the proposed construction and demolition landfill on Sibleyville Road is threatening everything we hold dear. We do not want a landfill abruptly invading our neighborhood, bringing with it potential risks to our water, health, agriculture, and property values.

The importance of this issue cannot be overstated. Our local water supply, a crucial component of everyday life and vital to our agriculture, could be compromised by potential contaminants leaking from the landfill. This risk is magnified by Warrior’s history of heavy rainfall and porous soil conditions, which make contamination more likely. According to a report by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), landfills can leak leachate into groundwater if not properly managed. By allowing this landfill, we are potentially exposing ourselves and our children to long-term health hazards and irreversible environmental changes.

Moreover, landfills are known to emit unpleasant odors and attract pests that can negatively impact the quality of life and the aesthetic value of our neighborhood. Attracting rodents and vermin presents additional health concerns and threatens the delicate balance of local ecosystems.

There are also severe economic implications. The construction of such a site can lead to a decline in property values due to the stigma associated with living near a landfill, which in turn affects the economic stability and growth of our community. Many residents rely on their property not just for shelter, but as an essential asset contributing to their financial well-being.

The alternative is clear: focus on sustainable waste management solutions. There are safer, more environmentally friendly solutions that can be explored, such as enhanced recycling programs and waste reduction initiatives that do not pose a threat to our environment and health.

We implore the city planners, decision-makers, and stakeholders involved in this project to reassess the plan for Sibleyville Road. Please refuse the proposed landfill construction and divert efforts toward more sustainable waste management practices that benefit everyone.

Sign this petition if you care about the future of Warrior, Blount County, and wish to protect our community from the detrimental impacts of this proposed landfill. Together, we can safeguard our land for future generations.
