Stop the Proposed Landfill in Wahiawa

The Issue

We are concerned residents of Central Oahu, distressed about the proposed landfill in our community. Our head of the Board of Water Supply, Ernie Lau, has emphasized, "We need water for life — Ola I Ka Wai, Ka Wai Ola." However, our water resources face considerable threats, especially in light of this landfill proposal.

Let's learn from our past. Our island community continues to grapple with the fallout from poor decisions made decades ago, whether by government officials or corporations who thought they knew best but did not. The recent Red Hill fuel contamination crisis is a stark reminder of how vulnerable our aquifer is to irreversible damage. Much like the government's mismanagement at Red Hill, the pesticides and harmful chemicals used by pineapple and sugar companies decades ago have left a legacy of polluted aquifers, requiring expensive and ongoing treatments to ensure safe drinking water. The lesson is undeniable: once our water is contaminated, the consequences last for generations and are incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to undo.

A landfill in Wahiawa poses a similar threat, especially as it lies directly over our aquifer. Landfills are notorious for their potential to leach contaminants, polluting the environment and jeopardizing the future of local ecosystems. Once pollutants enter our water, removing them becomes a complex and arduous process. Imagine a future where each glass of water comes with a side of regret.

Our aquifer is not merely a water source but a lifeline for our island community, our environment, and our very existence. This landfill, seemingly a solution to waste management, could turn into a catalyst for a sustained water crisis across all of Hawaii.

Therefore, we urge our local authorities and decision-makers to reassess this proposal. Preserve the health and sustainability of our ecosystem. Protect our aquifer from potential contamination. Please, stand with us in opposing this landfill in Wahiawa. Sign this petition to voice your support — together, we can defend our water and our island community.
