Stop the Proposed Islamic Sanctuary in Mickleham – Call for Responsible Urban Planning
The issue
We, the residents of Mickleham and surrounding suburbs, respectfully call on Hume City Council and relevant planning authorities to reconsider the scale and impact of the proposed large-scale Islamic sanctuary development on Donnybrook Road.
This petition is not against religion or cultural expression — it is about ensuring responsible, sustainable development that aligns with our infrastructure capacity, community wellbeing, and the suburban lifestyle that residents value and invested in.
Why This Matters
The proposed multimillion-dollar project includes a 2000-person mosque, Islamic school, medical centre, function centre, café, shops, and other facilities — all concentrated in one location. While we support the right to build community infrastructure, this development is too large for Mickleham’s current infrastructure and raises the following concerns:
Key Community Concerns
- Traffic Congestion: Donnybrook Road and surrounding streets are already overburdened. Thousands of extra cars during events, school times, and religious gatherings will severely worsen congestion and increase road safety risks.
- Noise and Overcrowding: Large events and regular gatherings will bring ongoing noise and traffic disruptions, affecting residents’ peaceful enjoyment of their homes, especially on weekends and holidays.
- Housing Affordability: Large-scale developments often inflate nearby property prices while reducing liveability, making it harder for first-home buyers and young families to afford housing in the area.
- Strained Infrastructure: Local roads, public transport, parking, and essential services like health and emergency response are not equipped to handle the pressure this development will bring.
- Planning Precedent: Approving this development as proposed sets a precedent for more high-impact projects that are out of character with Mickleham’s suburban identity.
- Impact on Local Schools and Services: Increased demand could overwhelm nearby public schools, childcare centres, and medical facilities that are already under pressure.
- Parking Overflow: Visitor and event parking is likely to spill into residential streets, causing safety issues and inconvenience for local families.
- Mismatch with Suburban Character: The scale and design of this development do not reflect the low-density, family-oriented neighbourhood Mickleham was designed to be.
- Lack of Transparency & Public Input: Many residents were not properly informed or consulted. A development of this size should involve full community engagement and transparent planning processes.
What We’re Asking
We respectfully request that Hume City Council and State Planning Authorities:
✅ Proactively consider community impact before any application is lodged.
✅ Reject any future building application for this development if submitted.
✅ Engage in early and open consultation with local residents on any major proposed changes to land use in our area.
Conclusion
Sign this petition to support sensible, sustainable development in Mickleham — and to protect the safety, affordability, and lifestyle of our community.
