Stop the Proposed Ban on Import & Trade Wildcaught Ornamental Fish in Flanders, Belgium

The Issue

The proposed law by local authorities in Flanders, Belgium, threatens not just my personal passion for ornamental fish and the local aquarium industry, but also the livelihoods of humble fishermen. These fishermen and their families rely heavily on their natural resources to make a living, collecting ornamental fish sustainably using their hands and fishing nets. They are in jeopardy due to the prospective ban on importing and trading wild caught ornamental fish.

Aquarium enthusiasts, fish breeders, and traders contribute significantly to Flanders' economy, and many small businesses risk being shuttered if this ban is implemented. Furthermore, it threatens a sustainable practice that provides income for not only fishermen but also transporters, collectors, and exports.

This ban would not only impact the local economy in Flanders but also in the third-world countries where these native fishermen reside. A large segment of the population depends on this trade to survive. The result could be an increase in unemployment rates and poverty.

While we understand the authorities' concerns about the environmental impact, there are many proven ways of conducting this trade sustainably without harming the environment or the local fish species. Already, in most countries, they havel local regulations to preserve sustainable collecting of fish.

We, therefore, request Flanders' authorities to rethink this proposed ban and open a dialogue with stakeholders from the aquarium industry, environmentalists, and representatives of the fishermen. It's possible, through education and regulation, to ensure that the trade of wild caught ornamental fish benefits everyone involved and adheres to environmental protection standards.

BE AWARE = when this law is put in action it can have an impact on all European countries in the near future!

Please sign this petition to support sustainable trade practices that not only support local Belgian businesses but also protect the livelihood of third-world fishermen and their families.
