Stop the prolonged use of fireworks in Scotland

The Issue

In Scotland, every New Year's Eve, Bonfire Night, and Diwali, dazzling displays of fireworks light up the sky. But let me share a personal experience about what happens beyond these celebrations.

My beloved dogs, become terrified every time fireworks go off. Even when it isn't a festive occasion, the random bursts of noise cause great distress. They shiver in fear, refuse to go outside to the toilet, start vomiting, have to be sedated and struggle to find a hiding spot. It's not just dogs who suffer—cats, wildlife, and even livestock are negatively affected. This can also affect veterans and those with special needs such as autism. The fear and anxiety caused by unexpected loud noises can lead to serious health issues, behavioural changes, animals running away and tragically, even death.

This isn't an isolated issue. Across Scotland, many pet owners and animal lovers share these concerns. According to a survey by the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Scottish SPCA), nearly 87% of pet owners reported their animals were distressed because of fireworks. This statistic underscores a broader issue that deserves attention and action.

We understand that fireworks are part of our cultural celebrations, and we're not advocating for an outright ban. Instead, we call for the restriction of fireworks use to licenced events and specific major celebrations. By taking this step, we can greatly reduce the harm caused to animals and still enjoy our traditions responsibly.

Alternative solutions exist. Silent fireworks, for example, provide a similar visual spectacle without the loud bangs. Raising awareness about the impact of fireworks on animals and encouraging the choice of quieter options could make a significant difference.

We call upon the Scottish Government to consider stricter regulations around the sale and use of fireworks outside of designated holidays. Let's strike a balance between celebration and compassion, ensuring our festivities don’t harm the most vulnerable.
