The Issue

Palomar Mountain stands as one of Southern California's most treasured natural jewels, a region known not only for its breathtaking vistas and rich biodiversity but also for its significance in local ecology and recreation. It is a sanctuary for wildlife, a paradise for hikers, and a canvas of beauty as seasons change. However, this invaluable landscape is under grave threat.

The proposed construction of a 500kV transmission line by CAISO, now in development with SDGE, is considering routes that are at the base or on Palomar Mountain. These routes pose an existential risk to this pristine environment. The imposition of such massive towers (up to 200 ft tall) not only mars the natural beauty but tragically heightens the risk of devastating fires — a calamitous vulnerability in a state already grappling with frequent and destructive wildfires.

Fires are exacerbated by such large infrastructures as they introduce multiple ignition sources and increase the risk of accidents. In fact, incidents in similar terrain have shown that high voltage lines can arc and ignite nearby dry vegetation, a scenario that could lead to catastrophic outcomes, as sadly demonstrated during the Paradise Fire, causing the death of 85 people.

Understandably, energy development and infrastructure upgrade are necessary to meet growing demands, BUT this cannot come at the expense of irreplaceable natural heritage. Sustainable alternatives such as rerouting away from ecologically sensitive areas are viable solutions that have been employed successfully in other regions. It is our moral duty to pursue these options with the urgency and seriousness they deserve.

Furthermore, the proximity of such infrastructure would tarnish Palomar Mountain’s status as an educational site. It houses the renowned Palomar Observatory, visited by thousands annually, drawn to both its scientific significance and the pristine beauty that enhances the experience of all visitors.

We must act now to protect this vital part of Southern California. It is not merely about preventing a construction project, but about safeguarding our natural treasures for future generations. Let your voices echo in the halls of decision-makers (SDGE, CPUC...) and let us forge a path of thoughtful and sustainable progress.

Sign this petition and stand with us in safeguarding Palomar Mountain from the ruins of industrial imposition. Your support is essential in echoing the importance of preserving our sacred outdoor spaces, ensuring that they endure for years to come.
