The Issue
In the heart of Oklahoma City, we find a vibrant and diverse community—a city that many call home. Today, it is under threat. I am among the many who love Oklahoma City for its rich cultural tapestry, particularly its strong Latino and Hispanic heritage, a heritage that has enriched our community in countless ways. However, our city and its values are being threatened by the proposal to construct a new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility on the southside of Oklahoma City.
This is not just a building. To many, it represents fear, division, and an unwanted federal presence that threatens the harmony of our community. The proposal for this facility feels like a harsh reminder of darker times—times when policies were used to intimidate and suppress hardworking families.
Oklahoma City, a place of hope and opportunity for countless immigrants, should not become home to a facility that symbolizes such division and distress. Our Latino and Hispanic brothers and sisters deserve to live without the looming fear of detention and deportation right in their backyard. What message does it send to our children to see armed guards and detention facilities in their neighborhoods?
This city thrives on inclusivity and diversity. According to recent data, Oklahoma City has one of the fastest-growing Latino populations in the United States. More than 20% of our city’s residents identify as Latino or Hispanic. They are entrepreneurs, teachers, public servants, and families whose contributions are integral to the fabric of our community. By allowing the construction of this ICE facility, we risk tarnishing the very essence of what makes Oklahoma City unique.
We urge local and state officials to reject the proposal to build this detention facility. There are better ways to address immigration concerns—ways that do not involve instilling fear or compromising the values of our city. We propose increased investment in community resources that foster integration and understanding instead.
Stand with us against this project. Show your support for a diverse and inclusive Oklahoma City. Sign this petition to oppose the construction of the ICE detention facility on the southside of Oklahoma City.
