Stop the privatization of Santa Ana's public soccer fields

Stop the privatization of Santa Ana's public soccer fields
The Issue
Growing up in Santa Ana, CA, our public soccer fields were more than just grassy plots. They were where we made lifelong friends, learned the importance of teamwork, and found a sanctuary that boosted our confidence. These fields were our haven — safe, affordable, and welcoming for every child and family. We gravely concerned about the proposed deal to privatize these beloved community fields, a move that would fundamentally alter the essence of our neighborhoods and deny future generations the same opportunities.
The proposed privatization threatens to convert our shared, public spaces into privatized venues, inaccessible to the very children they were built for. Our community already has limited access to safe recreational areas, and this proposal would exacerbate the problem, depriving our kids of valuable life experiences gained through sports and active play.
Public parks are crucial for a healthy community. The National Recreation and Park Association highlights how equitable access to parks and recreation centers is a critical factor in reducing childhood obesity and promoting mental well-being. Moreover, research consistently shows that children who engage in regular physical activity exhibit improved academic performance and emotional health.
We urge the city council to reconsider this privatization proposal and explore alternative solutions such as enhanced community partnerships, increased city budget allocations for maintenance, or volunteer programs that engage the community in the upkeep of these fields. By keeping our soccer fields public, we preserve an essential part of our cultural and communal identity.
Our children deserve the right to play on these fields regardless of financial standing. Join us in ensuring that Santa Ana remains a place where all children can learn, grow, and thrive. Let's keep our soccer fields public — for today, tomorrow, and all the generations to come.
Please sign this petition to show your support in keeping our public soccer fields open and accessible for all kids and families in Santa Ana.
