Yosemite isn't just any patch of land — it's the country's first protected wilderness, a place millions of people visit every year to see towering granite cliffs, ancient sequoia groves, and wildlife found almost nowhere else. Now that legacy is reportedly at risk. According to recent reporting, officials within the Trump administration are pushing National Park Service staff to hand over a piece of Yosemite to a private equity firm, clearing the way for a private road built straight into the park.

This isn't only about one road or one parcel of land. It's about what happens next if this deal goes through. Once a national park can be carved up and sold off piece by piece to benefit a handful of wealthy investors, there's nothing stopping the same thing from happening at Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, or any other public land Americans have spent generations protecting. Every acre of every national park would suddenly be up for negotiation instead of permanently protected.

National parks were set aside so that they would belong to everyone, forever — not to whoever can strike the right deal with the right official. Career National Park Service staff shouldn't be pressured into signing away public land, and no administration should be allowed to quietly set that precedent.
