The Issue

Tennis courts across the nation are being converted to accommodate both tennis and pickleball by painting pickleball lines on them. This practice is resulting in a diminishing clarity of visual cues for tennis players, causing confusion and disrupting performance.

The surge in pickleball's popularity has led to this increased demand for pickleball facilities which the City of Mesa has embraced. However, this should not come at the expense of the integrity of existing tennis courts. According to USTA, Tennis is also growing as a sport and its popularity has increased every year for the past 10 years.

Mesa recently added 21 lighted pickleball courts, yet when they painted the MTC  tennis courts to keep them updated, they also painted pickleball lines on the courts

The Recreation & Educational and Cultural Experiences Bond that is up for vote is asking us to approve spending of $170 million on Parks and Rec facilities, which include Pickleball courts at 4 additional locations.

We the undersigned would like to request that courts 1-8 at Mesa Tennis and Pickleball Center (Gene Autry Park) be maintained as tennis courts with only tennis and junior tennis lines painted on them.

Let's uphold the game of tennis in its pure form without creating a confusing mix of lines on the courts. Preserving the courts exclusively for tennis is important for maintaining the quality of the sport.
