Stop the Political Attacks on Sen. Analise Ortiz for Defending Her Community
The Issue
Arizona State Senator Analise Ortiz is being targeted by political opponents for doing what many elected officials claim to do: stand up for their communities. Because she publicly shared alerts about visible immigration enforcement activity in her district—something protected by the First Amendment—some state lawmakers are now demanding her expulsion from the Senate.
This is an outrageous misuse of government power to silence a legislator for speaking the truth and protecting families in her community. These notifications, shared publicly and widely, helped neighbors stay safe and informed—not unlike the alerts often shared by police about traffic stops or criminal activity in a neighborhood.
Sen. Ortiz’s decision to alert constituents when masked, armed agents were seen near a Phoenix school is not a crime—it’s a public service. And yet, Republican lawmakers are pushing for her removal and even requesting a federal investigation, despite Arizona’s own Attorney General affirming her actions are constitutionally protected.
These political attacks don’t just threaten Sen. Ortiz—they threaten democratic speech and the power of local representation. If legislators can be silenced or expelled for warning their constituents about public government actions, what does that mean for transparency and trust?
We urge Senate Ethics Committee Chair Sen. Shawnna Bolick and Senate President Warren Petersen to end this politically motivated crusade. The Ethics Committee must dismiss the complaint against Sen. Ortiz and affirm her right to represent and speak on behalf of the people who elected her.
Arizona deserves leaders who will stand up for what’s right—not punish those who do.
