The Issue

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is trying to overturn the will of voters by asking the Texas Supreme Court to remove Rep. Gene Wu from office—simply for standing up for democracy.

Recently, Rep. Wu and over 50 Democratic legislators left Texas to block a rushed and racially gerrymandered redistricting plan that would lock in Republican power and undermine fair representation. Their absence denied a quorum in the Texas House, slowing a process that many believe was designed to silence voters of color and limit electoral competition.

Now, Governor Abbott is accusing Rep. Wu of “abandoning his office” and has filed an emergency petition to have him forcibly removed. But that’s not justice—it’s political retaliation.

Rep. Wu didn’t abandon his duty. He fulfilled it.

As the chair of the Texas House Democratic Caucus, Wu acted in defense of the voters who elected him. He took a stand against what he and others—including former President Barack Obama—have called a dangerous power grab that could tilt the outcome of future elections for years to come. His decision was a form of peaceful protest against an undemocratic process—not a dereliction of duty.

No court should be used as a tool to silence dissent. Removing a duly elected official for disagreeing with the Governor sets a dangerous precedent. Today it’s Rep. Wu. Tomorrow it could be any lawmaker who dares to challenge political leadership.

Texans deserve leaders who will stand up for them, not bow down to threats. We must send a clear message: removing Rep. Gene Wu from office is not only wrong—it’s undemocratic.

Sign this petition to demand the Texas Supreme Court reject Governor Abbott’s request and defend the right of lawmakers to act in the best interest of their constituents—even when that means taking bold, uncomfortable action.

Let our representatives do their jobs—without fear, without punishment, and without political revenge.
