Data centres are becoming a growing concern globally due to their immense environmental impact. I am deeply troubled by the proposal to construct the GC1 data centre in Southport, as it poses several threats to our environment and community. Firstly, data centres require vast amounts of water for cooling purposes, which could significantly deplete our local drinking water supply. This becomes a critical issue, especially during times of drought, when every drop of water counts for the community's survival.

Moreover, data centres consume a substantial amount of energy, placing an even heavier burden on our already strained energy sector. With the increasing demand for renewable energy, it is crucial to prioritise sustainable projects over those like data centres that exacerbate energy depletion and dependency on fossil fuels.

Noise pollution is another major concern. The constant hum and operation sounds from such large-scale facilities can disturb local wildlife, disrupt community peace, and diminish the quality of life for nearby residents. And perhaps most alarming, studies have linked electromagnetic frequencies and radiations, commonly associated with data centres, to potential health risks..

We cannot overlook the cumulative detrimental effects the GC1 data centre may bring to Southport. Instead of forging ahead with this harmful project, we must explore alternative solutions that do not compromise our health, environment, and resources.

I urge the local planning authorities to reconsider the approval of the GC1 data centre. Let us prioritize our well-being, our environment, and our community's future over corporate interests.
