Stop the planned mass euthanasia of Canada geese at Lady Ann Lake

Stop the planned mass euthanasia of Canada geese at Lady Ann Lake
The Issue
Stop the Planned Mass Euthanasia of Canada Geese at Lady Ann Lake
Petition to the Edgewater HOA Board, USDA Wildlife Services, and City Officials
We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the proposed mass euthanasia of hundreds of Canada geese at Lady Ann Lake in the Edgewater community of Madison, Alabama.
The decision to kill hundreds of healthy birds is unnecessary, unacceptable, and out of step with the values of many residents and concerned citizens. Wildlife management should focus on responsible, humane solutions, not the wholesale destruction of an established wildlife population.
These geese are living creatures, not disposable nuisances. They are part of the natural environment that residents and visitors have enjoyed for years. Authorizing their mass killing sends the message that convenience outweighs compassion and that lethal force is the first solution rather than the last resort.
We reject the notion that killing hundreds of geese is the only option available.
Before a single bird is destroyed, the Edgewater HOA should be required to demonstrate:
Why non-lethal alternatives have been deemed insufficient.
Why residents were not given a greater voice in this decision.
Why a mass cull is being pursued instead of humane population management.
How killing hundreds of geese serves the long-term interests of the community.
Once these birds are killed, there is no undoing the decision. There is no second chance. There is no opportunity to reconsider.
We therefore demand:
An immediate halt to any planned goose euthanasia activities.
Full public disclosure of all permits, contracts, costs, and communications related to the cull.
A public forum allowing residents and stakeholders to voice their concerns.
An independent review of humane, non-lethal management options.
A commitment that no action be taken until the community has had an opportunity to participate in the decision-making process.
The measure of a community is not how it treats wildlife when it is convenient, but how it responds when challenges arise. We urge the Edgewater HOA and all involved agencies to choose transparency, accountability, and humane solutions over the mass killing of wildlife.
We call upon the Edgewater HOA to immediately abandon its plan to euthanize hundreds of Canada geese and pursue responsible, non-lethal alternatives instead.
We call upon local city officials in Madison, Alabama, to publicly review this matter, engage with concerned residents, and advocate for humane, transparent, and responsible wildlife management practices that reflect the values of the broader community.
We call upon USDA Wildlife Services and all relevant federal officials to carefully evaluate any permit requests associated with this proposed cull, fully consider non-lethal alternatives, and ensure that every available humane option has been exhausted before authorizing the destruction of hundreds of healthy birds.
We call upon local, regional, and national media outlets to continue reporting on this issue, provide transparency regarding decisions affecting public wildlife, and give a voice to the residents, advocates, and community members who oppose this proposed mass euthanasia.
Hundreds of healthy geese. One HOA vote. No second chance. Sign the petition and demand the cull be stopped.
