Animals are unable to advocate for themselves, which makes it our responsibility to be their voice. Umdoni Retirement Village has planned a cull of monkeys on the 26th of October 2025, from 06:00 to 10:00. This action is not just unnecessary; it's a cruel and violent measure against defenseless animals. Such a decision is not only morally wrong but could set a dangerous precedent for the future, where acts of violence against wildlife become acceptable or standard practice. At the heart of this all is Ezemvelo KwaZulu Natal Wildlife - an organization that is supposed to protect our wildlife- is now assisting in the planned murder of said wildlife. Who do we turn to when the people who are supposed to protect wildlife are the reasons behind their deaths. 

The cull has been justified as a means of conflict management, but there are humane alternatives available. For instance, Umdoni Retirement Village can adopt proven non-lethal management practices. Initiatives such as monitored feeding zones, relocation strategies, or sterilization programs can effectively mitigate any issues caused by the monkey population without resorting to killing them.

Moreover, these figures could be fact-checked through local wildlife statistics and biodiversity reports indicating humane success stories in similar contexts. Many wildlife organizations and animal conservation experts advocate for coexistent measures that preserve nature while maintaining human needs.

It's vital that we ask our community leaders, Umdoni Retirement Village's administration, and local wildlife authorities to reconsider this decision. We urge them to adopt non-lethal methods that protect these creatures while addressing human concerns. Imagine if every time wildlife came into our space, our response was violence. What message are we sending to future generations?
