Stop the PFAS “Forever Chemicals” factory in Mumbai

Stop the PFAS “Forever Chemicals” factory in Mumbai
The Issue
Mumbai is already struggling with polluted air, contaminated water, and severe public health challenges. Allowing a factory that manufactures or processes PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances)—commonly known as “forever chemicals”—will push the city toward an irreversible environmental and health crisis.
PFAS are called forever chemicals because they do not break down naturally. Once released into the environment, they remain in soil, water, and the human body for decades. Scientific studies across the world have linked PFAS exposure to cancer, liver damage, hormonal disorders, weakened immunity, infertility, and developmental problems in children.
Mumbai’s dense population, coastal ecosystem, and dependence on shared water sources make it especially vulnerable. Any PFAS contamination can spread rapidly through:
- Drinking water supplies
- Marine life and fisheries
- Agricultural produce
- Groundwater and soil
Once PFAS enter the ecosystem, cleanup is extremely difficult, expensive, and often impossible. The cost is ultimately paid not by corporations, but by citizens, taxpayers, and future generations.
Many countries are already banning or strictly regulating PFAS due to these proven risks. Allowing a PFAS-related factory in Mumbai goes against global environmental responsibility and violates the precautionary principle of environmental protection.
We urge the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), and all concerned local authorities to:
- Immediately halt approvals for any PFAS manufacturing or processing facility in Mumbai
- Conduct transparent, independent environmental and public health impact assessments
- Ensure full public disclosure and citizen consultation
- Promote safer, sustainable chemical alternatives
- Mumbai deserves development without poisoning its people.
We also urge national and regional media to investigate, report on, and bring public attention to the risks of PFAS and the decisions being taken behind closed doors.
