Stop the Pacific Ave parking ban - demand a safe street compromise
The Issue
The City is planning on narrowing PACIFIC AVE street in AUBURN in front of railhead park to put in an 8-foot wide bike path, painting BOTH sides of the curbside RED. This will permanently ban all street parking past the railroad tracks and Sacramento Street.
While the intention behind the ban might be centered around creating safer streets, it's crucial to recognize that safety and accessibility can exist together. We need a compromise that doesn’t leave residents, daily park users and event goers without viable parking (street parking on Pacific Ave makes up of 85% of people compared to the less then 1% of cyclists.
Federal Data shows that Road Narrowing only reduces speeds by 2-5%.
Our community thrives when every resident is supported and included in big decisions. Let’s rally together to advocate for a comprehensive solution that prioritizes the well being of all Pacific Avenue residents, daily commuters and Railhead Park users.
SOLUTION:
Implement a Focused 3-to-4-Foot Bike Lane: Instead of a massive 8-foot wide bike path that destroys all street parking, that satisfies safety requirements while keeping the shoulders open.
Fix the Sidewalks We Have: Use the allocated grant funds to pour clean concrete sidewalks over the dangerous, unfinished dirt and gravel patches currently on our street. This will eliminate walkers using the street avoiding unsafe sidewalks.Add in more sidewalks continuing all of Pacific Ave to the railroad tracks.
High-Visibility Street-Level Crosswalks: Active Pedestrian Lighting & Signage. Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons, In-Roadway Warning Lights, OR Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons. Since Measure Q legally strips the city of using speed cushions, these lit street-level crosswalks are the most effective data-backed alternative left to protect the neighborhood. One of these three options for crosswalks at the beginning of Pacific Ave, Railhead Park & the Overhead look. Crosswalks need to be put in place on Pacific Ave from the adjacent side walks to Railhead Park, and the Overlook Park.
Three Way Stops: at Meadowlark Court, to reduce accidents and visually blind spots due to the curved street. Three Way Stop at Pinecrest Ave, Portland Ave, & at the Entrance of Overlook Park.
Pavement Speed Markings: Painting large, reflective speed limit numbers (e.g., "25 MPH") directly onto the center of the asphalt lanes
Targeted Police & City Interventions:
The list of suggestions would significantly make Pacific Ave safer by 85% compared to road narrowing, banning street parking, and adding an 8 foot wide bike lane without addressing all of the safety issues we have daily with Pacific Ave.
