On June 16, the federal government will offer 156,000 acres of Colorado wilderness to oil and gas companies. It is the biggest public land lease sale in the state's modern history. And it threatens the survival of 17 rare and endangered species.

The Bureau of Land Management's sale includes more than 100 parcels in northwestern Colorado, two-thirds of which sit just south of Dinosaur National Monument. The acreage spans critical migration corridors for the nation's largest elk herd, as well as habitat for black-footed ferrets, wolverines, boreal toads, Colorado pikeminnow, and threatened plants found nowhere else on Earth. The Gunnison sage-grouse — already at risk — will not breed if it senses danger from oil and gas infrastructure nearby.

This sale is not happening because federal land managers decided it was appropriate. It is happening because Trump's 2025 legislation mandated it, stripped land managers of the discretion to defer sensitive parcels, and shortened public comment periods. Conservation groups who filed a 106-page objection saw only a handful of parcels removed. Hundreds of others with similar characteristics remain in the sale.

Once these leases are issued they stay on the land for a decade. By law the parcels cannot be managed for wildlife habitat, wilderness, or recreation during that time — whether or not a single drop of oil is ever extracted.
