The Issue

In Ealing, thousands of pounds are being spent on spraying our streets and other public areas with glyphosate-based herbicides. This expenditure is unjustifiable when considering the significant risks it poses to our wildlife, residents, and beloved pets. Despite its widespread use, glyphosate does not provide a sustainable long-term solution for general weed management. Aside from tackling Japanese Knotweed and Giant Hogweed – which may require specific applications – its general use is flawed as it demands repeated applications.

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in many herbicides, has been linked to serious health concerns, including potential carcinogenic effects as classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2015. The risk extends not just to humans but also to the environment, impacting biodiversity by harming insects, birds, and aquatic life. In public areas where children play and communities gather, this is an unacceptable gamble with our health and ecosystem.

There are alternative methods for managing weeds that are both effective and environmentally friendly. Techniques such as mulching, organic herbicides, and manual removal provide non-toxic options to keep our streets clean while protecting our environment and public health. Some cities have successfully implemented these strategies, proving that a glyphosate-free approach is both viable and desirable.

Therefore, we call on the Ealing Council to stop the non-essential use of glyphosate in public spaces. Furthermore, residents should be given the option to 'opt-out' of having glyphosate sprayed near their homes. Not only does this respect individual choices and health concerns, but it also encourages a more sustainable and community-centred approach to public land management.

We can make Ealing safer and healthier for everyone, but we need your support to make this happen. Please sign this petition to demand a rethink in our weed management strategies and put an end to the unnecessary use of glyphosate in our beloved borough.
