The Issue

This petition begins with the personal story of a 90-year-old man who has watched the Leafs since his youth, using hockey as his primary source of entertainment and joy. Now, due to the National Hockey League's exclusive broadcast agreement with Amazon Prime, he and countless others, are forced to pay additional fees for a service they hardly need or use just to enjoy the thrill of a single game.

Restricting game broadcasts to a single paid platform is a disadvantage to the devoted fans who may not be technologically savvy or have the means to afford Amazon Prime on top of their already high media bills. For instance, our 90-year old Leafs fan's monthly media bill is already a staggering $300. Adding Amazon Prime just to watch hockey is daunting.

In the 2018-19 season, the NHL had an estimated 669 million fans globally (Sporting News, 2020). The decision to limit broadcasts impacts all of these loyal lovers of the game, silencing the roars in living rooms of those who can't afford or don't want to subscribe to another specific service.

We should not be penalized for the NHL's choice to squeeze more profits from their fans. It's about access to a sport that many of us have grown up loving and eagerly waiting for each season. We request the NHL to reconsider their exclusive agreement with Amazon Prime and broaden their broadcast horizons. Share the love of hockey, not the burden of excessive expenses. Please sign this petition to help spread awareness and spur change in the NHL's broadcast policies.
