Stop the Nairne Battery Energy Storage System
The issue
I am deeply concerned about the proposed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Nairne, South Australia. This development is alarming for reasons that extend beyond just a single project. Approving an industrial-scale BESS on productive rural land in Nairne would set a dangerous precedent for the Adelaide Hills and agricultural regions throughout South Australia. The implications of this decision are far-reaching, impacting not just local communities but the broader Adelaide Hills region.
The proposed site for this BESS is currently within Rural Zoning, within a High Bush Fire area. By allowing this BESS to proceed, we risk inviting similar developments in other rural and agricultural areas across the Hills.
Moreover, industrial developments such as this pose significant environmental risks. Narrow thought has been given to soil or water contamination, bush fire risk, local heritage place impact or operational noise. They can negatively impact local ecosystems, disrupt wildlife, and alter the landscape in ways that could be irreversible. The Adelaide Hills has long been celebrated for its natural beauty and biodiversity, and it’s imperative we protect these treasures for future generations.
Renewable energy and storage solutions must be carefully planned and situated and should seek alternative sites that do not compromise productive land and prioritize technological solutions that align with ecological preservation.
Please join me in urging local authorities and decision-makers to reconsider the approval of the Nairne BESS. Let us take a stand to protect our Rural amenity and support sustainable development practices that recognize both progress and preservation.
