The Issue

The MTA is phasing out MetroCard by December 31st, but they’ve already started removing vending machines-leaving riders stuck. OMNY double-charges us, glitches out, and still excludes express bus from reduced-fare programs. We want MetroCard alive, or OMNY fixed and fair:

Dear MTA Chairman Janno Lieber, Governor Hochul, and every elected official who rides-or pretends to ride-public transit, This is our last plea. Don’t kill MetroCard. We swipe it every day-My seven-day express bus pass is $64, covers unlimited  express & local bus, subway, Staten Island Railway. Monthly reduced-fare is around  $65-but only if you’re lucky. Express bus? Never included, even though it’s life-or-death for folks with disabilities living far from ferry terminals. We’re not luxury riders-we’re just trying not to collapse after a transfer while getting to work to feed our families. And OMNY? Please. Failed taps turn into surprise bills. One swipe that doesn’t work? They’ll charge you twice. Three swipes? You pay for all three. I once got billed $21 for one ride. The subway’s a mess-filthy, unsafe, full of people who shouldn’t have to live there-but I still pay my fare. The express bus is cleaner, safer, faster. Yet you’re forcing us onto a broken tap-and-go while pulling machines mid-transition. By October 21st, my station already had half gone. How am I supposed to refill before New Year’s? We demand: 1. Keep MetroCard through 2027-no expiration. 2. Include express bus in all reduced-fare programs, disability or not. 3. Fix OMNY-no ghost charges, instant refunds, machines everywhere until it’s actually ready. 4. Clean the damn trains. We ride them. We deserve them. This isn’t about nostalgia. It’s about fairness. Sign if you’re tired of getting played by the system you’re paying to survive. And MTA-if you think we’ll just roll over, guess again. We’re done being quiet.
