Stop the move of the Buckroe Beach Carousel

Stop the move of the Buckroe Beach Carousel
The Issue
The Buckroe Beach Carousel has been located in Carousel Park for 30 years. The carousel is also Known as the Philadelphia Toboggan Company Number Fifty. The planned development of the downtown waterfront as shown in the video released by the Downtown Development Authority show the carousel relocated to Mill Point Park. The Carousel and its building are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The roots of the carousel run deep in the history of the City of Hampton as it was installed in 1920 at Buckroe Beach amusement park in what was Elizabeth City County. When the amusement park closed, the city purchased it and the current location was developed for its preservation. There are few remaining Philadelphia Toboggan Company carousels left in the United States.
The carousel is fragile. When it was restored and placed at its current location, it was the intent it remain there. For whatever reason, there is serious consideration being given to moving the carousel. The majority of the public disagrees with a move to Mill Point Park and most disagree with any move at all.
Council was elected to represent the people of the city. The purpose of this petition is to send a strong message that the carousel should not be moved and if the city continues to consider the move, it should be only after public hearings taking input from the residents they serve and/or a referendum vote on the relocation.
