The Issue

I'm writing this petition because of a proposed development that deeply concerns me and many residents in our town. A building right beside the cenotaph, a place we hold sacred for remembering those who've served and sacrificed, is under consideration to be converted into a mosque. While formal planning hasn't been put in yet, it's crucial that we act early to voice our concerns.

The cenotaph isn't just a monument; it's our shared heritage and a symbol of our town's history. It represents the solemn respect we pay to those who gave their lives for our freedoms. Situating a mosque—a religious and community space that caters to a specific religious group—so close to this monument, could diminish that neutrality and the universal respect the cenotaph commands across all communities.

Furthermore, it's important to consider the potential conflicts this might generate in our community. While diversity is something many of us celebrate, it's essential that communal developments are sensitive to the historical and cultural landscapes they engage with. This proposed site is not just any building; it's directly adjacent to a symbol that represents universal peace, memory, and unity. Constructing a mosque right at this doorstep might disrupt this symbolic balance and provoke unnecessary division.

Additionally, the town has yet to see any formal plans, so there's still an opportunity to engage in constructive dialogue with local authorities to explore more suitable sites that don't compromise our cultural landmarks. This conversation should include transparent discussions with community members, religious and cultural leaders, and town planners to ensure that the needs and sentiments of everyone in the community are considered.

Let's come together to express our concerns before any planning consent is given. By signing this petition, you stand with us to ensure that our cenotaph remains a place of universal reverence and that any religious developments in our town respect the delicate balance of our communal and cultural fabric. Please sign and share this petition to make our voices heard.
