Stop the Misuse of 22 Rutgers Street and Demand its Clean Up
The Issue
For over two decades, we have witnessed the deterioration of 22 Rutgers Street in Maplewood, NJ. Once a symbol of our community's charm and unity, this property has now become a source of distress. The misuse of this residential area as a business location is not only against local zoning laws but also disrupts the peace and harmony that define our neighborhood.
The son, who owns an electrical contracting business, has moved back two years ago to aid in the care for his mother. However, even though he moved away to Millburn, he continued to store his vehicles at 22 Rutgers and use the property for the purposes of his business.
The situation has worsened in recent years. The property is in disarray, causing an eyesore for residents and visitors alike. This misuse is not just about aesthetics; it's about safety too. Unkempt properties can pose various health hazards such as pest infestations or accidents due to debris.
We believe that every resident deserves to live in a clean, safe environment free from unnecessary disruptions caused by inappropriate commercial activities in residential areas. It's time for us to take action against this violation.
Some examples:
- Continual use of “Bagsters” as a dumpster for the business on the front walk. The latest has been there since Thanksgiving.
- Two commercial vehicles on the property (one used, one inoperable)
- The back yard is a menagerie of metal waiting to be sold for scrap.
- Two inoperable vehicles that have not moved in almost two years.
- Various wildlife (Raccoons) living under the deck and in the garage.
- Glass panes missing in the garage window.
- Christmas decorations from 2 years ago falling off the eaves of the house.
We urge local authorities to enforce zoning laws at 22 Rutgers Street immediately and ensure its clean up for the betterment of our community. Let us restore peace, safety, and beauty back into our beloved neighborhood.
