The Issue

Oregon’s forests are more than just landscapes, they are living ecosystems that support endangered species, store carbon, filter water, and shelter generations of wildlife. But right now, those forests are under threat from a dangerous federal bill disguised as wildfire prevention.

The so-called Fix Our Forests Act would allow logging and grazing projects of up to 10,000 acres on federal land, including national forests, to proceed without any environmental review or public input. That’s more than triple the current threshold. This bill weakens the bedrock environmental safeguards that protect public lands, watersheds, and biodiversity across Oregon.

Half of Oregon’s land is federally owned. If this bill passes, millions of acres could be opened to clearcutting, habitat loss, and soil degradation, all without considering impacts to wildlife corridors, old-growth forests, or Indigenous cultural resources.

True wildfire resilience requires science-based solutions: restoring native plant communities, investing in prescribed burning, and empowering local agencies with real funding. This bill does none of that. Instead, it gives industry a fast pass to extract timber and expand cattle grazing, while limiting legal accountability and slashing community oversight.

We call on Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley to stand with Oregon’s environmental community and vote NO on the Fix Our Forests Act.

If passed, this bill could roll back decades of hard-fought environmental protections and set a dangerous national precedent. Oregon must not become the testing ground for dismantling the laws that defend clean air, clean water, and wild habitats.

Our forests belong to the people, not private interests. Let’s keep them protected, resilient, and wild — for the salmon that swim beneath their canopies, the owls that nest in their branches, and the future generations who deserve to walk among them.
