The Issue

As a concerned resident of Lafayette, Indiana, I am deeply troubled by the proposed construction of a pipeline that aims to transport an astonishing 100 million gallons of water per day from our aquifer to Lebanon, Indiana. This excessive extraction poses a significant threat to our local water supply and could have severe consequences for our community's future.

Our aquifer is not an infinite resource; it is a delicate balance that sustains us and provides clean drinking water for generations. The potential impact of diverting such an immense volume of water from Lafayette to support a chip factory in Lebanon raises serious concerns about the long-term sustainability and availability of this vital resource.

The proposed pipeline would span 35 miles southward, putting additional strain on our already stressed aquifer system. With growing population demands and increasing agricultural needs in our region, it is crucial that we prioritize responsible management and conservation practices rather than allowing large-scale industrial projects to exploit our precious resources.

Furthermore, this pipeline project threatens not only the quantity but also the quality of our water supply. Construction activities associated with pipelines can introduce pollutants into nearby bodies of water through accidental spills or leaks. These contaminants could potentially infiltrate into groundwater sources or surface waters connected to them, compromising both human health and ecosystem integrity.

According to experts at Purdue University's Department of Earth Sciences, excessive withdrawal rates from aquifers can lead to land subsidence—a phenomenon where land sinks due to underground depletion—resulting in irreversible damage to infrastructure such as roads, buildings, and even natural habitats.

By signing this petition today, we are urging local authorities including Mayor Tony Roswarski and City Council members representing Lafayette (source: City Government website) along with relevant environmental agencies like Indiana Department of Natural Resources (source: IN.gov) - Division of Water Resources - Ground Water Section, to take immediate action and halt the construction of the LEAP Pipeline.

We demand that a comprehensive environmental impact assessment be conducted to evaluate the potential consequences of this project on our aquifer, including its long-term sustainability and potential risks associated with water quality. We also urge our elected officials to explore alternative solutions that prioritize responsible water management practices, such as implementing stricter regulations on industrial water usage or promoting sustainable technologies for chip manufacturing.

Our aquifer is not just a resource; it is a lifeline for our community's well-being and future prosperity. Let us come together as concerned citizens of Lafayette, Indiana, and protect what is rightfully ours—the right to clean and abundant water for ourselves, our children, and future generations.

Sign this petition today to safeguard our aquifer from overexploitation and preserve the integrity of Lafayette's water supply. Together we can make a difference. Please hold donations until further notice.  Thank you!
