Stop the Large-Scale Solar Farm in Higgins Township: Protect Our Forests, Wildlife, and Community!

We, the undersigned, urge local officials and decision-makers to reject the proposal for a large-scale solar farm in Higgins Township that will deforest thousands of acres of pristine land. While renewable energy is critical for combating climate change, this project comes at an unacceptable cost to our environment, wildlife, and community.

Why This Matters:

1. Devastating Environmental Impact

The proposed solar farm will result in the loss of hundreds of acres of forests and natural habitats, permanently altering the landscape. Forests in Higgins Township play a critical role in:

Carbon Sequestration: Local forests store significant amounts of carbon, helping to mitigate climate change. Deforesting these areas will release stored carbon and exacerbate global warming.

Biodiversity Protection: The project threatens the habitats of many species, including the Kirtland's warbler, bald eagles, white-tailed deer, and numerous pollinators essential for our ecosystems.

Water Quality: The removal of vegetation will increase soil erosion, leading to sedimentation in rivers and wetlands, disrupting aquatic habitats and local water quality.

2. Poor Location Choice

Higgins Township receives only 165 sunny days annually—about 45% of the year. This low solar potential means the energy production from this project will be far below optimal, failing to justify the large-scale environmental destruction it will cause. Studies by organizations like Harvard Forest and Mass Audubon show that better alternatives, such as rooftop solar or installations on already-developed land, are more sustainable and efficient.

3. Threats to Wildlife

Deforestation and habitat fragmentation will force wildlife to migrate, increasing competition for resources and leading to higher mortality rates. Many species, such as the Eastern box turtle, Northern leopard frog, and bobcats, rely on these habitats to survive. The disruption to pollinators like monarch butterflies and bees will further impact the local environment and agriculture.

4. Impact on Local Climate and Livability

Large-scale solar farms contribute to localized warming (heat island effect) and disrupt local wind patterns, humidity, and precipitation. These microclimatic changes threaten agriculture, biodiversity, and the overall health of our community. Moreover, light pollution from the facility will disturb nocturnal wildlife and reduce the area's natural beauty, a key asset for recreation and tourism.

5. Alternatives Are Available

This project is not the only way to meet renewable energy goals. Better options include:

Rooftop Solar: Utilizing existing rooftops and parking lots minimizes environmental harm while expanding solar capacity.

Brownfields: Transforming previously disturbed or developed lands for solar farms avoids the destruction of forests and farmlands.

Smaller, Community-Based Projects: These provide clean energy without sacrificing natural resources.

What We Are Asking For:

We demand that:

1. Local officials reject the proposal for this large-scale solar farm in Higgins Township.

2. The developers prioritize alternative locations such as rooftops, parking lots, and previously developed lands.

3. Environmental impact assessments be made publicly available for community review.

4. Incentives for solar projects focus on low-impact installations, not deforestation.
