Stop the Krugersdorp-North Tavern
Stop the Krugersdorp-North Tavern
The Issue
The members of our communities comes across challenges such as dealing with crime, a culture of violence, drug and alcohol abuse which affects their development. (Roux and Mokhele, 2011). In countries where alcohol is openly advertised and readily available, alcohol abuse is common, since it is consumed by many on a daily basis in social settings at an affordable price (Connor, Harbert and Hall, 2016). Alcohol related problems in South Africa contribute to high rates of road traffic crashes, crime, interpersonal violence and unsafe sex (Chersich and Rees, 2010; Jones, Hughes, Atkinson and Bellis, 2011). This makes the distribution and the number of alcohol retail outlets that contribute to alcohol abuse a national concern, since it poses a threat to the health and safety of the people in the community (Thombs et al, 2008).
The current grievances and concerns surrounding the Tavern in 4th Street, Krugersdorp-North.
- Expanding the current Tavern to an open-air Tavern.
- Not consulting with adjacent and close by surrounding households and businesses.
- Noise disturbance.
- SAPS not responding to noise disturbances anymore.
- Owner, tenants, and employees not responding to requests to turn the music down.
- Being sworn at when communicating with owner, tenants, and employees
- Out of previous experience: not keeping to opening and closing times.
- Concern for the communities' safety with an influx of vagrants and unknown people to the Tavern.
- Safety and peace of mind with not having drunkards in the street at all times of night.
- Keeping our community clean, not having drunken people will result in:
- Not having broken bottles in the streets
- Urination in people's gardens
- Noise disturbances (music & people shouting)
- Minimizing break-ins and property damages
- Safety and peace for the surrounding community
- Safety for our children with less drunkards and vagrants looming.
- Peace and quiet for community during weekends to rest.
- Minimizing drug lords, and drug abuse that follows businesses like these.
