Stop the Killing of Wolves

Stop the Killing of Wolves
The Issue
We the undersigned vigorously oppose the indiscriminate and unethical killing of wolves in British Columbia, Canada. According to a RainCoast Conservation Foundation report in 2022, 1,200 wolves are killed in BC annually for recreational purposes. In addition the government has sanctioned a wolf cull program to protect woodland caribou. This problem was created through the construction of access corridors in caribou habitat that enables wolves easy routes for predation. In many areas of BC there is no limit to the number of wolves that can be killed daily.
Wolves are apex predators that play a vital role in maintaining ecosystem integrity and balance. Among other things, wolves regulate prey species and cause them to shift around thus reducing stress on vegetation. This in turn provides spinoff benefits for water regulation and ecosystem diversity. Drastically reducing wolves distorts ecological and evolutionary relationships. It is simply unethical to kill large numbers of predators anywhere. Wolves that are heavily hunted suffer stress and this can become multigenerational.
Many First Nations are opposed to the indiscriminate trophy hunting of wolves. To some, the wolf is seen as a spirit animal.
Tour companies and their clientele may benefit from wolf sightings even though they are elusive.
Wolves are seen as an iconic symbol of the wilderness and places like Yellowstone National Park have seen a surge in visitation and revenue.
The BC government does not have a scientific basis for hunting wolves. There is no transparency on how hunting quotas are determined and whether they are subject to external review. The manner in which wolf hunting in the province is carried out is barbaric and unethical. Please help stop the wolf kill. (Photo credit, Anthony Bucci)
