The Issue

The serene landscapes of Central Virginia are under threat from the proposed Joshua Falls - Yeat Transmission Line. This development proposal is more than just a string of electrical towers and cables—it represents a fundamental change in the character and tranquility of our rural communities.

We have the privilege and joy of calling the beautiful region of rural Central Virginia home, where a slower, quieter pace of life is reveled. The thought of our horizon obscured by towering metal structures and the invasive hum of power lines is atrocious, not only to myself but to countless others who cherish the peaceful landscapes of our rural counties. The transmission line will not only serve as a massive eyesore, but allow Valley Link and Dominion to plunder and devastate our land.

Such a project poses risks to property values and disrupts local ecosystems. Studies have shown that transmission lines can negatively affect real estate values by as much as 20-30% due to decreased aesthetic appeal and potential health risks from electromagnetic fields. Moreover, wildlife habitats could be irreparably damaged, displacing native species and disrupting biodiversity.

The Joshua Falls - Yeat Transmission Line would provide no benefit to the counties it runs through. Its sole purpose would be to funnel energy to Northern Virginia data centers. Over recent years, our community has valiantly fought a siege of data center advancements. First, with the construction of new data center campuses, they came for our water. Now, with the transmission line, they are coming for our private land.

Alternatives to this project must be explored. Enhancing the efficiency of existing infrastructure, investing in underground cabling technology, and adopting renewable energy systems are all viable avenues that would preserve our precious landscape while serving the intended electrical needs.

Remember, a billion dollar enterprise has never, and will never act in the best interest of a small community. Their fight is for financial gain; ours is for something much more important: the rural landscape we have chosen to live and raise our families in, the unpolluted night sky, an unobstructed country sunset, and the soothing sound of frogs peeping on an early spring evening. We may be the smaller opponent, but we have far more at stake. Please advocate for yourself and for your neighbors; the louder we are, the higher our chances are of crushing this nightmare. In order to preserve Virginia’s rural charm and beauty for generations to come, it’s important that all of us make our voices heard.
