The Issue

We believe that the proposal to introduce digital ID cards in the United States is a step towards mass surveillance and digital control. A national ID system, especially one in a digital format, poses significant threats to our personal freedoms and privacy. The idea of all citizens being forced to register with a state-controlled ID system is alarming. History has shown us that such systems, if implemented, can easily become tools for unwarranted surveillance and control by the government.

Digital IDs could potentially expose sensitive personal data to hackers and cybercriminals, making citizens vulnerable to identity theft. According to a report by the Identity Theft Resource Center, data breaches are becoming more frequent, with 1,108 breaches recorded in the United States alone in 2020, compromising over 300 million sensitive records. The introduction of digital ID cards would only exacerbate this growing problem, as more personal data would be stored and potentially accessible by unauthorized entities.

Furthermore, a national digital ID card system could lead to increased discrimination and inequality. Individuals who lack access to digital resources or the necessary technology skills might find it challenging to obtain and use these IDs, thereby marginalizing already vulnerable communities.

We can look to countries like India, where the Aadhaar digital ID program has faced criticism for privacy violations and exclusion of the disadvantaged. Despite its intention to provide a unique identification to every citizen, there have been numerous reports of breaches and misuse of personal data. This serves as a cautionary tale for the United States.

Rather than embracing a digital ID system, we urge the government to consider alternative measures to ensure security and identification without infringing on privacy and freedom. Measures could include bolstering the security of existing systems without resorting to mass digital surveillance.

Join us in opposing the creation of a national digital ID system. Let us protect our freedom and privacy. Sign this petition to tell the United States Government that we say "No" to digital ID cards.
