Stop the introduction of GST in Guernsey - deputies listen to the public
The Issue
The States of Guernsey are wanting to bring in a Goods & Services Tax (GST) at a time where islanders are being hit by the cost of living crisis - food, fuel, rents/mortgages all seeing massive increases and now is not the time to introduce GST!
Deputy Mark Helyar wrote the following in his 2020 manifesto and yet he is now at the forefront, trying to bring in this new tax to islanders.
“I believe if we start down the path to higher taxation we will see business opportunity reduce and costs rise in all areas.
Our young people, wealthy residents and businesses in all sectors will not stay in an island where there is no opportunity.
History tells us that in almost every jurisdiction, once a new tax is introduced, it never goes away. Once we put our taxes up we will have let the genie out of the bottle.
I believe we should drive success, not drive it away.”
This highlights how some of the deputies who were elected in 2020 can no longer be trusted to vote how the public thought they would - it’s more important than ever that islanders show deputies they are against GST.
Now the States of Guernsey will of course argue (through potentially biased modelling) that some islanders will be better off with the introduction of GST. Please don’t be fooled, as even if you are better off to begin with, then they can just raise GST over time (this has happened in Jersey and in the UK with VAT). Once this new tax is in there is no getting rid of it, as Deputy Helyar implies.
