The Issue

Proceeding with the bloated $1.2 billion Inner Harbor seawater desalination project places the city of Corpus Christi and its water customers at a high risk. The design has an elementary flaw: its intake and effluent are adjacent, and in a 'dead-leg' (very limited inflow/outflow), cause for recirculation/reduced production). This also places the facility at significant risk of contamination failure- oil product leaks from multiple industries located right there-plant leak opportunties as wells as ship loading/unloading spill risks. A  single spill could contaminate the intake and potentially shut down our water supply, a risk too high for our community to bear.  This is a multiple point failure risk, a bad design.

The partners involved in Inner Harbor project have not been transparent,  concealing salinity modeling input (initial and boundary conditions), claiming this commonly shared research information to be IP (intellectual property). As such no one can have the minimum information to determine if their modeling covers the conditions of interest and is done to acceptable standards. To have paid for this, and be simply told to accept that "its fine, trust the experts" is a red flag in itself. This is not standard industry practice, and its not IP (intellectual property).

At an astonishing $1.2 billion, the price tag not only burdens the city's finances but also ties the community's resources heavily to a project with questionable outcomes. It's imperative to evaluate and prioritize guiding values and metrics to invest in alternative solutions already presented that are affordable,  environmentally sustainable, and timely (Kiewit's last SWRO plant in Carlsbad, CA took 14 years to complete). We need water sooner.

We urge the city authorities to halt all work and funding related to the Inner Harbor desalination project. Let us work together on available, timely solutions that truly safeguard our city's future. Please sign this petition to make our voices heard.
