Indigenous families throughout North America are currently struggling with a significant housing crisis. Many find themselves in overcrowded and unsafe living conditions, often in homes that are not well-maintained. This situation arises largely from insufficient government funding and restrictive policies. In cities, Indigenous individuals face homelessness at much higher rates, largely due to discrimination in housing and a lack of support services. On reserves, communities contend with poor housing conditions, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to clean water and electricity. This issue goes beyond having a roof over one's head; it touches on the fundamental needs for dignity, safety, and the right to live on one’s ancestral land.

If things remain as they are, Indigenous families will keep facing avoidable struggles, such as unsafe living environments, being pushed off their ancestral lands, and ongoing cycles of poverty. Without sufficient investment in housing that respects their culture and is sustainable, entire communities risk losing their traditions and independence, leading to forced moves and homelessness. On the other hand, if steps are taken now, Indigenous Nations can regain control over their housing, paving the way for future generations to enjoy safe, affordable, and self-determined housing options.

The Indigenous housing crisis is a pressing concern, and we can’t delay any longer. Climate change, resource extraction, and government neglect worsen living conditions for many. Fortunately, recent movements advocating for Indigenous rights and justice have gained significant traction by presenting a genuine chance to advocate for meaningful policy changes. Governments and policymakers must listen to our calls and act quickly to address housing inequalities, honour treaty commitments, and respect Indigenous sovereignty.
