Stop the increase in social workers' registration fees

Stop the increase in social workers' registration fees

The Issue

We, the undersigned, strongly oppose Social Work England’s decision to increase the annual registration fees for social workers.

Social Work England's decision to raise annual registration fees for social workers is a step in the wrong direction. Social workers are the backbone of our communities, tirelessly supporting children, adults, and vulnerable groups throughout the country. They provide essential services, ensuring the well-being and protection of countless individuals and families. Yet, despite their significant role, they face increasing workloads, escalating living costs, and an alarmingly underfunded sector.

Raising registration fees adds a disproportionate financial strain on these professionals, who are already stretched thin. The increase in fees is not only unfair but jeopardizes the ability of social workers to continue their vital work. With the sector facing chronic underfunding, social workers are already personally funding necessary resources to support their clients effectively.

According to a recent survey conducted by the British Association of Social Workers (BASW), more than 75% of social workers reported that increased workloads are affecting their mental health. Moreover, the average salary of a social worker is substantially lower than that of comparable professions in public service sectors, exacerbating financial pressures.

We call on Social Work England to reconsider its decision to raise the registration fees. Instead, we urge the implementation of a fee structure that reflects the realities of the social work profession and does not deter professionals from entering or remaining in the field.

Most importantly, social workers voted against this fee increase, making this decision undemocratic and out of touch with the realities of the profession. Ignoring the voices of frontline workers undermines trust and respect between the regulator and those it serves.

We are also deeply concerned about the current approach to Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Workers are required to submit CPD regularly, yet many are unimpressed that these submissions are rarely reviewed in a meaningful way. This has left social workers questioning the purpose of the process, which feels more like a bureaucratic burden than genuine professional development. To increase fees while continuing with such ineffective systems shows a disregard for the profession’s time, money, and expertise.

It is time to stand together to protect our social workers and, by extension, the most vulnerable people in our communities. Sign this petition to urge Social Work England to halt the registration fee increase and invest in the resources and support our social workers desperately need. Our communities rely on these dedicated individuals. Let’s not let an unjust financial burden drive them away.

I know this petition may be harder to gain widespread public backing, as our profession is not always fully understood or supported. The challenges we face are often hidden behind the scenes, making it harder for others to see the pressures we are under. That’s why it’s even more important that we come together. If we don’t stand up for ourselves, no one else will. We cannot wait for recognition or permission to fight for fairness.
